The Liberty Engineering-VEX Robotics Competition provides students with a hands-on, co-curricular competition for learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The nature of this event is to instill an interest in robotics in a fun and exciting environment.  An over view of the program can be found here:  Robots can be built from any single or combination of VEX robot kits, however, all robots must be able to pass the Robot Inspection Guidelines and Robot Inspection Checklist specified for the event.  The competition will consist of a twenty-second autonomous period (operation based on programming of robots) followed by two minutes of driver-controlled play, as defined by rules for the VEX “Round UP” competition, found here: Each team should have an opportunity to participate in a minimum of six qualifying rounds. The VEX Round Up Manual on the above website provides more in-depth information about the competition. Students who are novices are encouraged to participate and contact SECS to request a “college student mentor”.

We have opened slots to host a total of 36 teams, with a limit of no more than 4 teams from any particular organization.  The VEX registration fee is $75 for the first team and $25 for each additional team from the same institution. Registration is open on the VEX website at and will continue until Friday, February 24, 2012.  Please use the code “RE-VRC-12-7498” when registering for this event.  A limited number of VEX robot kit are available to lend to any team needing a robot kit to enter the competition; please contact SECS as noted below to make arrangements.  Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) also has VEX Robotics kits available; please contact Barbara Bragg at or (434) 832-7672.

Various awards will be given to the top teams, and numerous door prizes will be given.  Up to three teams from this event may qualify to register for the World Championship in Anaheim, CA on April 19 – 21, 2012. Please contact SECS at (434) 592-7150 or with any questions or to request more information.
